Garage doors are one of the most frequently used mechanisms in your home. Therefore, not only are they more exposed to damage, but they can also wear out before time if they are not properly maintained.
Each component of the garage door system is essential for a good operation and each kind of garage door needs inspection and maintenance for efficient functioning.
Patrick Nardone, the Gialluisi Custom Homes specialist in garage doors, talks about garage door maintenance:
How does the garage door eye work?
The photo eye of an automatic garage door represents a safety feature. It works by preventing the garage door from closing in the event that it senses a certain obstruction. It can also prevent damage or injury to a vehicle or person situated in the door’s path.
Garage door eyes have two sensors, one on either side, and they work by directing a beam towards one of the transmitter. Not only are the sensors delicate but they can also become misaligned very easily.
If your garage door eye is not working properly, you need to take action right away, because the more you wait the more damage you can cause.
1. Do you know how to use a garage door eye system?
The easiest way you can check your door system is to do a regular visual assessment. This might bring up issues you haven’t previously considered, such as parts that are damaged and need replacement. The garage’s backup feature is functional and efficient but, like all machines or products, it too needs regular maintenance.
2. Is the LED light from the sensors working properly?
Once you locate the photo eye sensors, you need to ensure that each of them is working accordingly. If the LED light is lit on only one sensor, you could try to adjust the other one by slightly manipulating it manually.
3. Out of alignment?
If broken, the invisible beam set between the photo eyes prevents the garage door from closing. In order for that not to happen, the photo eyes need to be properly aligned and most importantly, clean.

4. What about the wires?
If you have a problem with the wires leading to the photo eyes, the first thing to do is to identify the issue.
For instance, if the wire is twisted with something stored in the garage, you can easily and carefully free it yourself. However, when the wire is damaged or the door is still not opening, the best thing to do is to call a professional.
