Your home’s color palette is important: not only does it set the stage for the furnishings and decorations inside, but it also conveys personality to the house.

Most of the time when it comes to choosing the right paint color, frustration takes hold. Paint is relatively simple to apply or change. However, using the wrong colors can do more harm than good.

This is why so many people choose to “play it safe” and stick to neutral colors. Sounds like a very good plan, as long as you follow some simple rules.

Home decorating: is neutral right for your home?

“Neutral” doesn’t necessarily mean white. It is only when you see paint colors in real spaces that you get to notice the intensities of each shade and the way it merges with your home’s surroundings.

Adding a different wall paint to a certain room can completely change its entire atmosphere.

Here are some simple guidelines to help you decide if neutrals are right for your home:

Remove your wallpaper if it’s outdated and add a fresh color for a contemporary look. Using a light color can help you make the most of the available space and create the feeling of a larger room.

If you’d rather have your walls as a background than a focal point, then you should go with a neutral color.

Neutral decorating colors are ideal if you are not sure which shade to pick. For those that prefer colorful decorations or want to visually balance a strong accent wall, neutrals are the perfect choice. They can create spaces that are restful, warm and energizing.

Using traditional neutrals

A neutral color is also known as a shade that doesn’t fall into any of the standard colors associated with the „color wheel”:

These include the grey, brown and white families. These colors will not create any discord with your current furnishing and color schemes. This is why so many people prefer them.

White cabinets, grey walls, neutral backsplash and a dark island are the perfect example of a traditionally neutral design. These elements reflect elegance, comfort and a sense of luxury.

Gialluisi Custom Homes has taken the same approach in using neutral colored designs, but we have added in a modern twist. Here are some examples:

When and why should you use neutral colors?

Neutral colors work well together to create a comfortable, elegant and relaxing effect in your home. They are independent of style and trend, and can support all decor styles from contemporary to traditional.

No need to worry about your furnishings and accessories not fitting in anymore!

Given the fact that they are rarely exciting in their own right, neutral color schemes become very sophisticated when put together with a starring color in their midst. Have you ever tried this?

Gialluisi Custom Homes recommends getting to love the wide range of neutral colors and using them liberally as a base for any room.
